How to make a working elevator in Minecraft

Step 1. Make a cross where you want to make your elevator.

Cross

Step 2. Dig a two-block down hole in the center of the cross and place a note block (a redstone lamp also works) in the bottom of the hole.

Step 3. Dig 1 block down below the note block. Do the same below that and place 2 redstone dust on that 2 block wide hole we just dug.

Step 4. Place your block of choice on top of the redstone at the bottom with any kind of button on it.

Step 5. Put an observer on top of the note block and sticky pistons either side.

Step 6. Place 1 slime block on the observer, 2 on each sticky piston.

Step 7. Place a sticky piston facing down on the slime block in the middle and an observer facing down on the sticky piston.

Step 8. Place your block of choice everywhere you can see a slime block.

Step 9. Next, build up as high as you want your elevator to go and place obsidian above the observer. These blocks will be temperary.

Step 10. Break the temperary blocks and place a note block underneath the obsidian. Place your block of choice on the obsidian with two either side and place a button on it.

Step 11. Build down from the two blocks either side of the block with the button on it. Build your base off of it.

Decorate it how you like and press the button at the bottom and hop in.

This is what mine looked like when I was done decorating
